Position Last Season – 1st
Coach – Paulo Sousa
Odds – 11/10
Player to Watch – Andre Alves. Alves was a machine last season for Videoton scoring 20 goals in the league, claiming the NBI golden boot for the first time in his 5 years in Hungary. He has been touted with moves to England, Portugal, Greece, Austria, Belgium and Holland, but with the arrival of ex-Juventus player Paulo Sousa as manager, Alves seems like he might be sticking around and that will be vital if Videoton are to claim the league this season, or qualify for the Champions League proper.
Rising Star – Roland Szolnoki. This might be a surprise to most Vidi fans, but I really expect the 18 year old to push on this season, and make a few telling appearances for the first team. His games have been limited to just reserve team action in Hungary’s second tier so far, but he has impressed in pre-season and that’s been enough for Sousa to give the left footed midfielder a new 3 year contract. Hopefully we’ll see a lot of him this season in the red and blue, and his progress won’t be stunted by Sousa’s foreign imports.
Realistic Target – With Sousa considerably strengthening his squad this summer, anything but 1st place will be a disappointment for Videoton, and would probably result in Sousa’s sacking. But with other title contenders failing to bring in any similar quality into their sides, Vidi should walk the league this season.
Prediction – 1st
